Aromatherapy can be applied by two main methods, inhalation and topical application (directly onto the skin). Both of these methods can
affect part of our brain called the limbic system. This is the system that
affects our emotions and in response has a positive influence on the endocrine
system (mood), metabolism (digestion) and the theautomatic nervous systems
(bodily functions).

Inhalation

Inhalation can be the most direct
method of delivery for the therapeutic properties in oils. When essential oils are inhaled
through the nose, aromatic molecules are carried through the lining of the
nasal cavity via tiny olfactory nerves (our sense of smell). These nerves are
located in the roof of the inner nose and are connected to part of the brain
called the limbic system (associated with emotional response and mood change). Essential oils can trigger positive mood
changes and favorable emotions; this makes them the perfect remedy for stress
or emotional destruction.

Topical Application

When essential oils are applied to the
skin, their healing components are absorbed into the bloodstream. Absorption time can take between 20 - 70 minutes. The unique
therapeutic properties of each essential oil can be used to stimulate physical
processes such as elimination, circulation and digestion or to ease muscle
tension, aches and pains.

Whether inhaled or applied topically,
essential oils can help bring about fundamental changes in physical, mental and
emotional wellbeing by triggering, and strengthening our
bodies’ own natural responses.
