With the
growing number of pesticides in our food and the mounting evidence of the
dangers that harmful chemicals are causing to our health it has become more and
more important to choose our food with care.

Go
Organic

By choosing organics
foods you are guaranteed a few comforting facts. Under organic standards your
food will not have controversial additives like aspartame, tartrazine, MSG
and hydrogenated fats as they are all banned under organic standards.
Basically organic food contains more of the good stuff we need in our diets
i.e vitamins and minerals and less of the bad stuff which our bodies are
unable to cope with i.e additives, pesticides and drugs.

Doing Our
Bit For The Climate

By choosing organic
we are doing our bit for the climate. Organic farming reduces pollution
and greenhouse gases released from food production by restricting the use of
the use of artificial fertilizer’s and pesticides.

Helping
The Farmers

The lack of these
damaging artificial fertilizers and meanies, means that organic farms are a
haven for wildlife. They become the first choice home for bees, birds
and butterflies. According to the Soil Association, plants, insects and
bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms.

Which
Food

The really important
foods to go organic with for me are milk, butter, flour, all fruit & veg.
The Pesticide Action Network particularly highlights certain foods as
vital organic choices. These foods are flour, potatoes, bread, apples, pears,
grapes, strawberries, green beans, tomato and cucumber.

I also strongly
encourage going either organic or free range on meat chicken and eggs.
When it comes to fish ensure the fish is farm grown or river fish.

Where To
Start

Start with the
basics, change your stable foods to organic - milk butter and eggs. Every
week introduce a different organic fruit or veg to your shopping basket and
slowly build up your organic food ratio in your kitchen. Try to
find box schemes in your local area, these are a great way to get affordable
organic produce from local farmers, it is a win win for everyone especially
your health.
