Insomnia Explained

Insomnia is very common and we will all experience it to some level during our adult lives

Sleep deprivation is relative to us all and some people can happily manage with 5 hours sleep. Two famous examples are Martha Stewart and Margaret Thatcher, this explains how they managed to fit so much into their days. However, a lot of people need 8 or 9
hours sleep each night. You will
know if you have a good sleep pattern if you can get out of bed easily while feel
reviatlised and refreshed.

It is helpful
to understand the main causes of insomnia, we can then tackle these to aid a
better peaceful sleep.

Allergies

Allergic
rhinitis also known as hayfever is a common cause of sleeplessness or
insomnia. This allergy is caused
by airborne particles, which irritate your nasal passage particularly while you
sleep. The causes of hayfever stretch beyond pollen with dust and
mould having the ability to stimulate hayfever. The bedroom offers a perfect breeding
environment. It is warm and humid and you lie in your bed for at least 6-7
hours daily, therefore you need to consider the exposure of your sensitive
nasal passages and how easy it is for irritants to enter.

Solutions

When
washing your bed sheets add 2 drops of tea tree or eucalyptus oil to them
before you put them in the machine to help kill all the mites. A steam
inhalation with warm water and 4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil before bed
will protect your mucous membrane within the nasal passages. The dust mites will not like the aroma
or the powerful anti septic properties so they won’t stand a chance.

Stress

Stress is a long known cause of
sleeplessness. Hormones are held responsible particularly for women between the
age of 42 to 69 this is due to the hormonal changes of the menopause and hot
flushes that cause restless, hot flustered nights. A particularly stressful period in your
life can lead to severe insomnia. To make matters worse long term insomnia has
been proven to head to cellular damage causing a rapid increase in the aging
process both externally and internally.

Solutions

Herbal
help in the form of Valerian is at hand. Valerian is a herbal sedative which is
a more organic alternative to conventional sleeping tablets. If you ask a herbalist to combine it
with passionflower you will have a brilliant sleep remedy.

Adding passionflower
herb with honey to a cup of warm water makes a beautiful drink as a sleep aid
as does chamomile tea, which can be readily bought from herbal tea companies

Put 2
drops of Organic Lavandin on your pillow or 3 drops of Organic Ylang Ylang in a
bath before bed to reduce stress, calm your mind and encourage a peaceful
nights sleep.

If the menopause is causing havoc in the dark of the night, try
sage herb in a tea or tincture to settle the sweats and ease you’re hormones
leading to better sleep and less 4am pacing.

I hope
these suggestions help

Helichrysum Italicum is the perfect oil to
help you forgive and forget
