Introduction
The food lists in this book are based on resources created by Monash University (FODMAPS) and the RPAH Allergy Unit (FOOD CHEMICALS - salicylates, amines and glutamates.
FODMAP are sugars that can cause Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. Food chemicals can upset the gut and cause many other symptoms, not unlike symptoms that can be caused by side effects to medications. The symptoms can be just about anything. but often include fatigue, headaches, unexplained rashes, altered moods and difficult to explain symptoms.
Creating a combined FODMAPS and food chemical diet (i.e. a friendlier food (ff) low reactive diet, has had many challenges. Unfortunately, many foods low in FODMAPS are high in food chemicals, and vice versa.
I hope you find this list as helpful as I have for managing both fodmap and food chemical sensitivities.
Recipes based on this food list can be found at friendlier food.com.
Anyone who does not experience increased tolerance to foods within 3-6 weeks should see there doctor. Many treatable health conditions can mimic food intolerance.
Anyone who needs to manage food intolerance long term are advised to consult with a dietician. Your dietician can help you establish your level of tolerance to different FODMAP sugars and food chemicals, and help you modify your diet accordingly.
