Key point 1: The shell is the most important part of your hot tub

It makes up the majority of what we see in a hot tub.  But how many people do you think ask about the shell before they buy a hot tub.

If you guessed zero. You were right.

It's not sexy. Everyone wants to know about the pumps, jets, lights and music. But your hot tub shell is the ONE thing that cannot be economically fixed or replaced if it breaks. If your shell cracks or warps and starts leaking water. Guess what! You need a new hot tub.

Hot tub shells look the same from the outside. But, how the acrylic is treated during that manufacturing process makes or breaks how strong the hot tub shell is.

WHAT YOU NEED TO ASK

  • How is the hot tub shell made and strengthened?
  • How long is the hot tub shell under warranty?

AVOID:

Cheap hot tub shells that are stretched so thinly that they are barely thicker or more heat resistant than a bathtub. This will not stand up against the temperature and chemical pressures of a hot tub for long.

LOOK FOR

A fibreglass strengthened acrylic shell with a good warranty.

Key point 2: Great hot tub filtration cuts down on maintenance time

You've probably thought about it a lot, and asked the questions:

How much maintenance will a hot tub need?

You're buying a hot tub to relax. So you don't want to spend all your time cleaning and adding chemicals.

You are going to need to clean + add chemicals. It can't be avoided. But starting with a great filtration system is going to cut down on your maintenance time and make keeping your hot tub water clean and safe so much easier.

WHAT YOU NEED TO ASK

  • Where are the filters in the hot tub?
  • What size are the filters?

AVOID:

Small filters that don't have a lot of surface area to catch all the dirt and germs.

Top tip: Buy a spare so that you can swap them in and out when you are cleaning the other.

Key point 3: The number of pumps and jets isn't everything

Most people think more pumps and more jets = a better hot tub.

In a hypothetical world, this is true. But in the real world that isn't the case.

Each hot tub operates from a limited power supply. Usually either 13, 32AMP. No matter how many pumps a hot tub has, it CANNOT exceed the power supply available to it.

Yes. Some pumps are stronger than others. But a powerful 2-pump system is more than enough to create a powerful hot tub experience with 50-60 jets.

WHAT YOU SHOULD ASK:

  • Can I "wet test"/feel the power of the pumps?

AVOID:

Hot tubs packed full of pumps and jets. They all run off the same power supply. And having 5 pumps and 100 jets is just a ploy to make you think the hot tubs are much more powerful than they are.

LOOK FOR:

A hot tub with a good pump to jet ratio. A good rule of thumb is 1 pump per 25 - 30 jets. The most popular models we sell are 2 pump systems

Key point 4: A great hot tub supplier is essential

Finding a great hot tub manufacturer is only half the battle. An excellent local supplier is the other, equally important, half of the formula to ensure you end up with a great hot tub.

Buying from a great supplier might not seem like the most important thing at the time. But if you need them for a warranty or maintenance issue, you'll wish you had thought about it sooner.

AVOID:
  • Companies who offer kerbside delivery (only delivery to your door).
  • Companies located too far away too offer a service & warranty contract.
  • Companies who outsource their warranty.

LOOK FOR:

  • Companies who delivery the hot tub into place and install.
  • Companies who have an in-house maintenance team that will carry out warranty work if required.
  • A company who will likely be around to carry out that warranty. If they close down or go bust, your warranty is not valid.
