“Luck is opportunity and preparedness meeting”
My simple understanding of that is, if I am prepared for an opportunity I will have “good” luck, if I am not prepared for an opportunity, I will have “bad” luck.
My journey has included: love, grief, anger, addiction, complacency, divorce, job loss, evictions, debt and accomplishment.
Every piece of my journey is why I am a personal coach. I never lost my belief that I could be better mentally, emotionally and behaviorally if I learned from my experiences.
The latest part of my journey is where we are meeting. In November of 2018 I had a great job with great people making good money performing a job that I had no passion for. I was sitting at my desk HATING my job, when a question popped in my mind “What if I live another 20 years”? I was 60 years old and closer to the end than beginning. My answers were: I want to help people, I want to do something I am passionate about, I want to work from home, meet people from all over the world, learn new ways to effectively, consistently and positively improve my communication with myself and others.
The results have been fantastic! I am now a:

When I was deciding the topic to explore with DTB's first eBook I was going back and forth on a number of ideas. Did I want to share a technique, open up the doors to self-awareness, goal setting, motivation, communication, parts, etc.? This went on for a number of days before it hit me.....
So, what is being STUCK? Indecision, unable to move, trapped, is a few that come to mind.
So, moving from STUCK to MOVING won out!
I needed to move forward from indecision to action but first I had to adjust my state of mind. It really was that simple, but how? What were my reasons for the indecision? HOW CAN I ESCAPE?

Scenario one:
You’re sitting at your desk unmotivated, waiting for your next break? You KNOW there is more to your life than what’s in it today but are indecisive when making a plan to make changes. Your mind wanders aimlessly and unproductively. You find it difficult to listen to others because your mind is foggy. You find it difficult to concentrate. You can’t “turn your mind off”.
Scenario Two
Are you spending more time dreaming than doing? Ideas pop up in your head, you imagine this is exactly what you want.You smile when you think of the increase in satisfaction, money and whatever else floats your boat. However, your thoughts take a turn and now you are discouraged. You think of all the obstacles in your way, the lack of support, you have too many responsibilities to take a risk. Your mind races or you engage in obsessive thinking or reacting negatively.

A close family member is ill, you’re fearful that the worst may happen. You’re trying to stay strong for the family, but on the inside you feel chaos. You’re dealing with the family finances, care and trying to stay optimistic while your insides are churning. You feel “tired and wired”. Your thoughts “spin” and your mind seem cluttered. You can’t sleep, even though exhausted because you’re thinking way too much. You feel chronic body tension or pressure.

Besides the life guarantees of death and taxes, we can clearly add Ups and Downs to the list. Our emotional responses are on auto pilot as we move from one situation to the next.

Here's how this technique came into my life.
In 2018 I made a decision that changed my life! I quit my job to pursue a NEW career at 60, that career is Life Coaching/ Personal Development.
Yet in spite of my passion, my thoughts kept getting in the way. At every turn, my thoughts were discouraging me. It turned into a box I couldn’t seem to consistently get out of, in other words I was STUCK. I would jump from enthusiasm to doubt to discouragement to SITTING AT MY DESK waiting for the next idea to kick in. I needed a way to manage this BEAST.
It was in my Coaching Certification course that I was exposed to a practical and effective way to deal WITH ME!
This technique changed MY MIND! At 60 years old, I learned to tame one of my destructive BEASTS.
This technique has helped me MOVE THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY.
This technique enables me to go from doubt to conviction, discouraged to enthusiasm. I’m positive it can do the same for you.
I'll leave you with one more thought on how this will work.
Have you ever watched ANY sports event?
I'll use Little League sports for this example. Your child is having a blast, so you are happy. She/He strikes out with a chance for their team to win, you see the look on their face and you feel ______?
Are You Still Happy?
State changes happen that quickly.
This technique is one of many you can use for situations like this. For now, let's start here.

First, I identify what I want my state to be. Since I know what I am feeling and thinking, I ask myself:
What would I rather feel/think? What emotional and mental states do I want to be in?
What is the opposite of what I’m feeling/thinking? I simply look for the opposite.
EVALUATE
I decide I needed to feel/think with confidence, adaptability, accomplishment.
IMPLEMENT
Here’s what I do:
I think of ONE time all of those states of mind were in the same memory. I stand up, walk to a different spot in the room.
With my eyes closed, I recall a memory as vividly as I can. I hear the sounds of what I said, my pace, my complete control of the moment.

Once I'm back in that moment completely, I extend my arms and turn in a circle. This circle is a spotlight and covers the complete circle. I stay in that circle and moment until I am feeling what I want. I mentally put myself back in that place, having a phenomenal day, knowing that all the pieces are together for me to get pumped. I create a gesture with my hands to anchor this empowering feeling and mindset.
Test
I step in and out of the circle for 3-5 times to anchor it. I make sure to break the state with movement when outside my Zone.
BTW, I used a modification of this technique to write and complete what you are now reading. I was dealing with a slew of thoughts on why I couldn’t complete this. Yet, you are reading this now! This is my offer of proof that it works.

So, here is what I would like you to do:
Life has shown me that as soon as I think I have the answers, the questions change.There are many roads to travel in life, having a ready tool kit can help along the way. In this case, practice this until it becomes the new default.
This technique can be practiced anywhere, anytime YOU want. Play with it, make a list of states (mindsets) you want on command of and use the tool.
If you practice using this for fun, you will be ready when it’s needed. I believe it’s been said better by these gentleman:

Never stop learning or working for what you want. Nothing comes easy, ever, if you want something, you have to work for it. By working for it I mean work on your craft, learn from people who have something to teach. It’s just like anything else, practice makes perfect.

As I developed this skill, I decided to package states for different things (see below).How many times in your life have you found yourself in a mood, feeling or mindset that you wanted out of? How often could this simple and YES, a bit spacey technique help you? In Relationships? In Career? In Family?
Our “states” affect our behavior. Anger has a behavior, confidence has a behavior, jealousy has a behavior. This technique is one of many available to you, so enjoy it and I look forward to hearing about your results.
