Introduction

Why did I write this book?

I started media training in 2002. The phone went and Microsoft asked whether I offered media training services. I said I did as I fancied trying it.

It went well and I still do it alongside my journalism. Over the years I've observed some mistakes being made as you'd expect, and some crop up more frequently than others. People assuming journalists have an agenda, that they can insist on their job titles being in capital letters, that they can demand to see the copy before it's published - a lot of the same errors come up more often than once.

So I've put this short book together to guide you away from the ten biggest howlers. These will damage your relationships with journalists and might well work against you.

I hope you'll find it useful.
